Churchill Primary School, a village school in Langford, North Somerset, has received an outstanding endorsement in its latest Ofsted inspection. With 204 pupils, the school has been praised for its nurturing environment and dedication to excellence.
Inspectors highlighted the school’s friendly atmosphere, noting, “Pupils love coming to this welcoming and inclusive village school. The school day begins with warm greetings and calm routines.” They also commended the deeply embedded values of “love, respect and hope,” which shine through in the respectful relationships among students.
The report celebrates the pupils’ ambition and commitment to the school motto: “With kind hearts and determined minds, we inspire each other to be the best we can be.” Pupils demonstrate pride and determination in their work, which is evident in the school’s national test results.

Safety and care are paramount at Churchill. Pupils feel secure and supported, actively engaging in community-focused initiatives like fundraising, food bank collections, and litter picking that foster a strong sense of responsibility.
While Ofsted no longer issues single-word ratings, the school meets or exceeds expected standards in five categories: achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, leadership and governance, and early years. Notably, the school was rated at a “strong standard” in inclusion and personal development and wellbeing—an accolade reflecting its commitment to every child’s success.
The school excels at supporting pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Leaders collaborate closely with families and external partners to ensure tailored resources and equipment help all pupils thrive. Personal development flourishes through pupil leadership roles such as librarians, house captains, and collective worship ambassadors. The school council actively contributes to improvements, including playground development and celebrating attendance excellence. A broad range of extracurricular activities, from music and drama to cooking and sports, enriches the school experience.
Inspectors recommended fine-tuning early years activities to deepen learning and enhancing curriculum consistency to strengthen pupils’ knowledge recall and connections.
Headteacher Lorraine Woollven expressed pride in the report, saying, “This reflects the special atmosphere and approach to learning at our school. We are delighted with the recognition of our inclusion and personal development work, as our team strives to support every pupil every day.”
Churchill Primary is part of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, a network of 34 schools across North Somerset and Bristol. Partnership Chief Executive Dr Gary Lewis praised the school’s strengths, stating, “This report clearly celebrates Churchill Primary’s values and commitment to providing pupils with a well-rounded, enriching education that lays strong foundations for their future.”
