School with ‘Kind Hearts and Determined Minds’ Impresses Ofsted in Latest Report

Churchill Primary School, located in the village of Langford, North Somerset, has received high praise in a recent Ofsted inspection report. Serving 204 pupils, the school impressed inspectors with its warm, inclusive environment and strong commitment to student success.

Inspectors noted, “Pupils love coming to this welcoming and inclusive village school. The school day begins with friendly greetings and calm routines.” The school’s core values of ‘love, respect, and hope’ are clearly evident in the respectful interactions among pupils.

The report highlighted the school motto, “With kind hearts and determined minds, we inspire each other to be the best we can be,” and said pupils consistently strive to meet these high expectations. Pride in their work and a determination to succeed shine through, reflected in solid national test outcomes.

Safety and wellbeing are also central to Churchill’s ethos. Pupils feel secure and cared for, engaging actively in community projects like fundraising, food bank drives, and litter picks.

Ofsted assessed Churchill as meeting the expected standards in five categories: achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; leadership and governance; and early years. The school excelled to a strong standard in inclusion as well as personal development and wellbeing, with tailored support for disadvantaged pupils including customised equipment and adapted resources to support focus and comfort.

The personal development of students was highly commended. Pupils take on leadership roles such as librarians, house captains, and collective worship ambassadors. The school council plays an active part in fundraising efforts and encouraging positive attendance. Exciting extracurricular opportunities span music, drama, cooking, and sports.

While overwhelmingly positive, inspectors suggested areas for growth, recommending enhanced design of early years activities to deepen learning and more consistent curriculum delivery to strengthen pupils’ recall and connections across subjects.

Headteacher Lorraine Woollven expressed pride in the report, saying, “This reflects the special atmosphere and approach to learning at Churchill. Our strong standards in inclusion and personal wellbeing show how hard the team works to support every child daily. We live our values, and I’m delighted this shone through to the inspectors.”

Part of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, which includes 34 schools across North Somerset and Bristol, Churchill benefits from wider collaboration and support. Chief Executive Dr Gary Lewis praised the report, stating, “It celebrates Churchill’s strengths, values, and dedication to providing pupils with enriching opportunities, giving them a solid foundation for future success.”
