School where ‘guardian angels’ foster thriving pupils wows Ofsted

Fromefield Manor School, a private institution in Frome dedicated to pupils with autism and other special needs, has earned high praise in a recent Ofsted report. The inspectors highlighted that the school is a place where “pupils start to thrive,” offering a transformative experience for children who have often faced long absences and difficulties in mainstream education.

Serving up to 30 pupils aged 11 to 19, the school charges annual fees of up to £120,150. Despite these high fees, the impact on pupils is profound: “Most pupils have had unsuccessful placements or lengthy absences out of education before they arrive at Fromefield Manor School.”

The school’s success centers on its personalized approach. Staff invest time in building trusting relationships with each pupil, identifying their interests and motivators. This individualized attention quickly fosters a sense of safety, care, and readiness to learn.

The report noted the school’s calm and purposeful atmosphere. Staff welcome pupils warmly upon arrival, and consistent routines, including morning breakfasts, provide stability. Lunchtimes offer chances for social interaction, helping pupils develop friendships while learning to better understand and self-regulate their emotions.

A standout feature is the innovative ‘guardian angel’ program. This initiative encourages staff to look out for one another and perform random acts of kindness, cultivating a strong, supportive team spirit that benefits the entire school community.

Beyond academics, Fromefield offers enriching activities like litter picking, gardening, art projects, and visits to local shops, preparing pupils for adult life. The school also fosters a love of reading through regular library visits and selecting books that engage students’ interests.

However, inspectors did raise concerns about the school’s literacy program, noting it has yet to fully develop systems for assessing and addressing gaps in reading skills. Improving staff expertise and refining reading assessments are key recommended steps to help pupils become more fluent and confident readers.

Overall, Ofsted rated Fromefield Manor School as ‘Outstanding’ for behaviour and attitudes, and ‘Good’ across other categories, including quality of education, personal development, and leadership.

Headteacher Gemma Drury expressed pride in the positive inspection outcome, stating, “To be recognised as a ‘Good’ school in our first inspection reflects the passion, dedication and care that our entire team brings… We opened with a clear mission: to create a safe, inspiring space where every young person can feel seen and supported to achieve their potential. This report shows we are doing just that.”
