School Once in Special Measures Now Praised for Calm and Happy Ethos

Westwood with Iford Primary School, part of the Palladian Academy Trust, has made a remarkable recovery, earning a ‘Good’ rating in its latest Ofsted inspection conducted on May 7 and 8, 2025. This achievement marks a significant improvement from four years ago, when the school’s predecessor was placed in special measures.

Inspectors commended the school for its calm, happy, and safe environment where pupils flourish academically and socially. The school offers a rich and broad curriculum, including music, outdoor education, and performance opportunities, which contribute to pupils' well-rounded development. Staff were praised for their high expectations, while pupils demonstrated strong behaviour and positive attitudes throughout the inspection.

Head of School Heather Saunders expressed pride in the school community, highlighting the dedicated effort of staff, pupils, and families throughout the challenging but rewarding journey of improvement. She emphasized the inspectors’ recognition of the school’s warmth and strength.

Pupils were described by inspectors as proud of their school, showing kindness and respect while actively participating in enrichment activities like charity work, environmental projects, and community events. The early years provision received a ‘Good’ judgment as well, with children benefiting from a language-rich curriculum and strong support from the start.

Reading emerged as a standout strength, with pupils developing confidence and fluency in their reading skills, bolstered by strong parental engagement.

Executive Headteacher Simon Futcher attributed the success to dedicated staff and collaborative efforts within the Trust, including partnerships with Fitzmaurice. He noted that the focus on high-quality teaching, inclusive values, and community engagement has made a tangible difference, expressing optimism for the school’s future.

The inspection report also highlighted excellent safeguarding measures and the school’s commitment to staff wellbeing and professional development amid significant change. Areas identified for further improvement had already been addressed by the leadership team.

Donna Tandy, CEO of the Palladian Academy Trust, praised the school’s leadership and equitable opportunities provided to pupils. She celebrated the positive impact of the Trust’s support on both pupils and staff.

Westwood with Iford Primary School acknowledged the contributions of pupils, families, and colleagues across the Trust, looking forward to celebrating this important milestone with their wider community.
