The A396 Cutcombe Hill, the site of a devastating school bus crash that took the life of 10-year-old Oliver Price, will remain closed for the rest of the week. The tragic incident occurred last Thursday, July 19, when a coach carrying nearly 70 Minehead Middle School pupils and adults overturned between Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe.
The crash happened at approximately 3:15 pm as the bus slid off the road and down a 20-foot embankment. An off-duty firefighter traveling behind the coach acted swiftly to assist in freeing passengers from the wreckage. In total, 21 people were hospitalized, most of them children; many have since been discharged, though two children and three adults remain in hospitals in Bristol and Somerset.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the formal identification of the young victim, Oliver Price, whose family is receiving support from specially trained officers. Despite tireless efforts from emergency services, Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene. The coach was recovered on Saturday, July 21, and is now undergoing a detailed examination.

Though the initial accident scene investigation has concluded, Somerset Council continues a thorough safety inspection, which means the A396 will stay closed between B3224 (Rest And Be Thankful Inn, Wheddon Cross) and Bemberry Bank (Timberscombe). Local authorities have assured that neighborhood officers will be stationed at the nearby school in the coming days to provide support and address any community concerns.
Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington expressed heartfelt condolences to Oliver’s family and emphasized the ongoing police investigation. “Our thoughts are first and foremost with Oliver’s family at what must be an unimaginably difficult time. We will continue to make sure they’re updated,” he said. He also thanked emergency responders, voluntary groups, hospital staff, and the community for their support during this difficult time, highlighting the strength and unity of the local area.
