While many of Britain’s historic seaside resorts have struggled to maintain their allure amid shifting holiday trends and economic challenges, Sandbanks in Dorset stands out as a shining exception. This slender peninsula at the entrance to Poole Harbour boasts an average house price of approximately £1.28 million, making it the UK’s priciest coastal location.
Renowned for its golden sands, crystal-clear waters, and stunning views, Sandbanks has attracted notable residents including Geoffrey Boycott, Harry Redknapp, and rock legend Liam Gallagher. In 2005, the BBC revealed that property prices here surpassed those in global hotspots like Singapore, New York, and Paris. Nearly two decades later, this trend remains unchanged.
Despite a minor dip in prices over the past year, Sandbanks properties still command values more than three times the national average of £378,240, according to Rightmove data reported by the Express. Frequently referred to as “Britain’s Palm Beach,” this exclusive enclave continues to offer some of the most coveted waterfront homes in the country.

Rightmove confirms that Sandbanks remains the only British coastal area with an average property price standing above the £1 million mark. Nearby Canford Cliffs follows closely, with average prices around £974,635 despite a nearly 9% drop. Meanwhile, Hampshire’s Milford-on-Sea ranks third, with an average home price of £728,460, based on a comprehensive study analyzing over 200 coastal locations across Great Britain.
For buyers seeking more affordable seaside options, Saltcoats in Ayrshire leads as the most budget-friendly, with homes averaging £114,365. Easington and Peterlee, both in County Durham, occupy second and third places respectively, with Peterlee seeing a notable 15% rise in house prices from the previous year.
Interestingly, urban centres such as Glasgow, Bristol, and Edinburgh are now becoming more popular than Devon for property seekers, reflecting a revived interest in city living. London holds the top spot as the most searched location, with Cornwall maintaining a strong second place.
Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s property expert, noted: “While the pandemic-driven boom in seaside living has settled, coastal areas across Great Britain continue to attract buyers. Especially at this time of year, many envision what life could be like by the sea, or browse property listings during holidays.”
Steve Isaacs, Director at Luxury and Prestige Realty in Poole, commented: “The first half of the year has been positive despite high mortgage rates and political uncertainty. Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs remain highly desirable, with prime waterfront properties in Sandbanks performing exceptionally well. For those who can afford it, the lifestyle of a beautiful coastal location is an enduring draw.”
