Sam Smith Announces Engagement to Long-Term Partner Christian Cowan

Sam Smith has officially announced their engagement to Christian Cowan, the fashion designer who has worked with high-profile clients such as Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Heidi Klum. The singer, best known for the hit “Stay With Me,” confirmed to the New York Times that Cowan is now their fiancé after three years together.

The news of their engagement coincides with the forthcoming release of Smith’s fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, named after Cowan’s distinctive eye colour. The album serves as a personal reflection of the couple’s journey, tracing the development of their relationship.

Smith began composing the opening track, “Everlasting Love,” even before their first date with Cowan and completed it while they were together. Cowan collaborated closely with Smith, including assisting with the wardrobe for the music video of their 2023 single, “I’m Not Here To Make Friends.”

The pair have been publicly seen together on multiple occasions, including holding hands in New York several months ago and attending the 2024 Met Gala as a couple in May.

Despite their public appearances, Smith had previously expressed a desire to keep their romantic life private. In an October 2022 interview with GQ, they reflected:

“Over the last few years, as I’ve become confident in my skin, I’ve got loads of wonderful romantic attention. It’s been incredible. I’ve decided that I will always keep that private now. I have had relationships where I’ve shared stuff online and talked about it here and there. And I just don’t want to do that. I think being loved by someone is such a gift – for yourself. And I think my job can get in the way of that – the purity of that love – sometimes.”

Smith’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour, released in 2014, topped the UK charts. In 2017, the singer publicly came out as non-binary, embracing their identity.

This announcement marks a significant milestone in Smith’s personal life, celebrated alongside their evolving musical career.
