Plans to extend a rural cycle route in Somerset have been unanimously approved by the local council, despite concerns raised by nearby farmers about construction impacts. Lovell Homes is developing its Station Fields site on the western edge of Williton, which will contain 350 new homes alongside commercial, leisure, and public spaces. As part of legal agreements with Somerset Council, the developer committed to creating nearly 1.5km of walking and cycling connections to improve access for new residents to local schools and amenities.
The proposed extension forms part of the Steam Coast Trail, which aims to establish a car-free route between Williton and Watchet and ultimately from Minehead to Watchet. Two short segments will be constructed: one connecting Station Fields to the nearby Orchard Brooks development and another extending eastward toward Watchet. Both sections will feature 4-metre-wide paths to safely accommodate cyclists and mobility scooter users.
Concerns were expressed by local farmers, notably Robert Dibble, about construction timing and its impact on crop cultivation and machinery access. The planning committee acknowledged these worries, with conditions requiring the trails’ completion within five years or before 90% of the Station Fields homes are occupied. The committee also committed to mitigating unauthorized access through removable bollards and ensuring farmland gateways remain usable.

While the project received praise for enhancing safe, car-free travel options to local schools and villages, some councillors noted opportunities missed for improved school access and highlighted the importance of construction scheduling to minimize disruption. Nevertheless, after thorough debate, the committee gave unanimous approval to the plans, heralding a significant step forward for sustainable transport in rural Somerset.
