This November marks the third annual Beth Branson Memorial Match & Fundraiser, a heartfelt tribute to 19-year-old Bethany Branson, who tragically lost her life in November 2022 when the car she was in was struck by a drink-driving motorist. The event brings together friends, family, and rugby enthusiasts to celebrate Bethany’s passion for the sport while championing road safety and supporting vital local charities.
The match will take place on Friday, November 14, at Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club, with gates opening at 6:30 pm and kickoff at 7:30 pm. In a landmark moment for the fundraiser, legendary former England rugby captain Gill Burns MBE will serve as manager for the Wooden Spoon Barbarians team. Burns, who earned 73 caps for England between 1988 and 2002 and was part of the victorious 1994 Women’s Rugby World Cup squad, is renowned as a trailblazer in women’s rugby. She became the first woman granted Privileged Membership by the Rugby Football Union, received an MBE in 2005, and was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2014.
“To have someone of Gill’s stature and passion join us is incredibly meaningful,” said Bethany’s mother, Amy. “This adds profound significance to a night already filled with pride, remembrance, and love. We know Bethy would be thrilled.”
This year’s match coincides with a landmark moment for women’s rugby following England’s recent Rugby World Cup win, highlighting the progress made by pioneers like Gill Burns. Bethany, a devoted player for the Bridgwater & Albion RFC Ladies team, was known for her vibrant spirit, love of sport, and dedication to animal welfare.
Funds raised will benefit St Giles Animal Welfare, aiding rescued animals, and The Wooden Spoon Charity, which supports disadvantaged youth through sport and education. Scheduled during Road Safety Awareness Month, the event also serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers of drink-driving. Bethany’s family emphasized the importance of spreading her story: “If it encourages even one person to think twice before drinking and driving, that would honor Bethy’s memory.”
Supporters unable to attend can contribute through donations or by raising awareness on social media.
