Royal Navy Deploys Somerset-Based Wildcats to Enhance Drone Defence in Cyprus

The Royal Navy is deploying two Wildcat helicopters, based in Somerset, to Cyprus as part of an effort to bolster drone defence amid escalating conflict in the Middle East involving the US, Israel, and Iran. These helicopters, operated by 815 Naval Air Squadron from RNAS Yeovilton, will serve onboard HMS Dragon, a Type-45 Destroyer currently headed to the Eastern Mediterranean.

Equipped with Martlet missiles designed to intercept incoming drones, the Wildcats will complement the advanced ‘Sea Viper’ missile system onboard HMS Dragon. This cutting-edge system can launch eight missiles within ten seconds, providing a formidable shield against aerial threats.

The deployment follows recent successful interceptions of multiple drones near Cyprus, highlighting the increasing need for enhanced defensive capabilities in the region. While no further deployment decisions have been announced, the Ministry of Defence emphasizes its commitment to supporting regional allies and maintaining stability.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP commented on the move, stating: “We are moving quickly to further reinforce our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. HMS Dragon brings world-class air defence capability, and our Wildcat helicopters are armed with Martlet missiles to counter the growing drone threat. I am deeply proud of the professionalism and bravery of our Armed Forces personnel who have in recent days successfully taken action across the region to protect our allies and defend British interests.”

The Royal Navy’s actions underscore the UK’s dedication to regional security and its readiness to respond to emerging threats in this volatile area.
