Royal Navy Deploys Somerset-Based Wildcat Helicopters to Strengthen Drone Defence in Cyprus

The Royal Navy is deploying two Wildcat helicopters from RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset to Cyprus to enhance drone defence amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. These helicopters will be aboard the Type-45 Destroyer HMS Dragon, which is currently operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Operated by 815 Naval Air Squadron, the Wildcats will be equipped with Martlet missiles, specifically designed to intercept and neutralize incoming drone threats. HMS Dragon itself boasts the cutting-edge Sea Viper missile system, capable of launching eight missiles within ten seconds, providing robust layered air defence.

This deployment follows a series of successful drone interceptions around Cyprus, underscoring the increasing importance of counter-drone measures in the region. The Ministry of Defence emphasized the mission’s objective as bolstering drone defence support for Cypriot partners and maintaining regional stability alongside allied forces.

While the Royal Navy has confirmed the Wildcats' deployment, no further decisions regarding additional deployments have been announced at this time.
