Roman Baths Launch £1 Entry for Benefit Claimants to Boost Accessibility

The renowned Roman Baths are now offering £1 admission tickets for visitors receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Employment Support Allowance (ESA). This new initiative, timed to coincide with the Easter holidays, aims to make the historic Bath attraction more accessible to those on low incomes.

Councillor Paul Roper, cabinet member for economic and cultural sustainable development at Bath and North East Somerset Council, emphasized the importance of inclusivity: “Everyone should have the chance to experience the magic of The Roman Baths, regardless of their financial situation. This site is a true jewel in Bath’s heritage and one of the nation’s most significant ancient monuments. By offering £1 tickets, we hope families and individuals facing financial challenges will enjoy a meaningful visit.”

Eligible adults can bring up to four children aged six to eighteen for just £1 each, with children under six admitted free. Carers accompanying eligible adults also receive free entry. The discounted tickets will be available every day, year-round, across all time slots.

Typically, standard entry fees range from £26.50 to £33, depending on the date, although Bath and North East Somerset residents with a Discovery Card can enter for free. The revenue generated from the Roman Baths, along with the Pump Rooms and Victoria Art Gallery, significantly supports local social care funding. The council estimates that this income equates to adding around £151.23 annually in council tax for an average band D household.

Heritage services are projected to generate a surplus of £13.3 million for the local authority in the upcoming financial year, underscoring the vital role cultural attractions play in supporting public services. Councillor Mark Elliot highlighted this at a recent council scrutiny meeting: “The income from heritage services benefits the whole area. It is reinvested in essential services like social care.”

Visitors can purchase £1 tickets in advance online or by phone. Tickets must be collected on the day of the visit, and visitors are required to present valid identification along with proof of eligibility—such as a DWP confirmation letter or a Universal Credit statement—upon arrival. Full details on acceptable documentation are available on the Roman Baths’ official website.
