Road Closures and Resurfacing Work in Bridgwater Set to Cause Delays

Somerset Council is set to undertake extensive road resurfacing work in the Bridgwater area next week, which will lead to significant road closures and delays.

The major work on the Eastern Avenue junction with the A372 will take place over seven days, from October 13 to October 20. During this period, the road will be completely closed to vehicles 24 hours a day due to the complexity and scale of the resurfacing. As a result, the road cannot be reopened during non-working hours or weekends.

To manage traffic, two-way temporary signals will be installed along the A372. These signals will be manually controlled during daytime hours to ease congestion and minimize disruption.

Additional resurfacing work will be carried out on the A372 Westonzoyland Road beginning October 17, with expected completion between October 20 and October 24. This section will be closed on weekday evenings from 6:30 pm to 11:30 pm only.

Advance signage will be posted well ahead of the closures, supported by electronic variable message boards to inform drivers of the upcoming work and alternative routes. A clearly signed diversion will be in place while the roads are closed.

Although vehicle access to some properties may occasionally be restricted or delayed, pedestrian access will remain available at all times. Residents affected are encouraged to communicate directly with the site team to address any access concerns.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, emphasized the importance of the work and thanked residents for their patience. “Our team aims to complete this work as efficiently and smoothly as possible. We appreciate the community’s understanding and encourage residents to reach out if they have any access issues during the project.”

Traffic disruptions are expected, so motorists planning to travel through Bridgwater during this period should allow extra time and follow all signage and instructions.
