The beautiful Adderwell Water Meadow, a 3.5-acre riverside green space along the River Frome, has been successfully preserved thanks to an inspiring community crowdfunding effort that raised over £37,000. The Frome Town Council has completed the purchase, placing the meadow into a trust to protect it as a sanctuary for wildlife and a valued recreational area for residents.
This achievement is the result of persistent dedication by local groups, including the grassroots organization Friends of the River Frome, who collaborated closely with the council to safeguard the meadow from development threats. Mike Bull, chairman of Friends of the River Frome, expressed gratitude to everyone involved: “Without community support, preserving this important habitat wouldn’t have been possible. Water meadows like this play a crucial role in biodiversity, climate resilience, and flood management.”
Councillor Mark Dorrington highlighted the significance of this victory, emphasizing the meadow’s future potential as a space for community activities such as picnics, forest schools, and nature access that promotes mental and physical well-being.

A celebratory event is planned for late summer to honor the community’s achievement and commitment to preserving this vital natural asset.
