A growing number of young adults in England, particularly obese women, are being diagnosed with early-onset type 2 diabetes, according to new research from Imperial College London. This trend contrasts with falling rates among older adults, highlighting a concerning shift in the age profile of the disease.
The study, published in Lancet Regional Health Europe, analyzed new type 2 diabetes cases across England from 2011 to 2024. Findings reveal a sharp increase in diagnoses among people under 40, with women aged 20 to 29 experiencing a 69% rise, compared to a 43% rise in men of the same age group. Meanwhile, incidences declined in older populations, decreasing by 7% in men and 4% in women aged 60 to 79.
Obesity stands out as a primary driver of this surge. Young people developing type 2 diabetes are generally heavier at diagnosis, with body mass index (BMI) increases twice as high as their older counterparts. For white British women aged 20 to 29, average BMI at diagnosis jumped from 37.7 in 2011 to 40.7 in 2024, signaling more severe obesity levels in successive younger generations.

Dr. Shivani Misra, lead author and clinical associate professor, explains, “Earlier onset of severe obesity in young people is increasing their risk and lowering the age at which type 2 diabetes is diagnosed.” She emphasizes the urgency of early intervention, noting the serious long-term complications such as cardiovascular disease, limb-threatening ulcers, infections, and vision impairment.
The study also discusses weight-loss medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy), which are increasingly recommended for younger patients. However, Dr. Misra highlights the need for more research to understand their long-term effects and stresses that medication should complement broader prevention efforts addressing societal and environmental causes of obesity.
Helen Kirrane from Diabetes UK underscores the seriousness of rising diabetes rates in younger adults, warning of aggressive disease progression and increased complications. She calls for government action to limit unhealthy food marketing and foster environments that promote healthier lifestyles.
To curb this alarming trend, the study authors advocate for stronger public health policies targeting obesity from a young age, including tackling the obesogenic environment fueled by poor diet and sedentary living. Without such measures, the burden of early-onset type 2 diabetes and its devastating consequences will continue to grow.
