At Leonardo UK, two apprentices are spearheading the installation of IT systems at the company’s latest building - a groundbreaking move entrusting cyber apprentices with such significant responsibility for the first time. As the defense and security powerhouse expands in Bristol to accommodate its growing workforce, degree apprentices Ben and Rhys have been tasked with establishing cyber security and network infrastructure at the new office space.
Steve Knight, head of engineering and operations for UK cyber and security solutions in Bristol, expressed his swift confidence in the pair’s capabilities. Witnessing the apprentices’ professionalism and proficiency, he spoke proudly of their achievements in setting up cyber security systems and network infrastructure.
Ben, a second-year apprentice, emphasized his attraction to Leonardo due to the dynamic and constantly evolving nature of the cyber security industry. He articulated his enthusiasm for the continuous learning and adaptation inherent to the field.

Reflecting on their work, Ben highlighted the invaluable experience of applying their cybersecurity knowledge in a real-world setting - a stark contrast to their theoretical learning at university. He detailed their hands-on involvement in setting up hardware and extending the network to the new building, under the guidance of senior professionals.
Fellow apprentice Rhys emphasized the critical nature of their work in ensuring the operation’s cyber security. Acknowledging the initial challenges, he expressed surprise at the rapid progress they have achieved in just a few months.
Steve, a former apprentice himself, emphasized his commitment to granting today’s trainees more autonomy and responsibility than he was given. He applauded the apprentices' ability to surpass expectations when given the freedom to pursue their goals independently.
