Rishi Sunak’s Plan to Reinstate National Service Impacts Thousands of Somerset Teens

Rishi Sunak’s proposed National Service initiative could compel over 800,000 18-year-olds, including nearly 12,000 from Somerset, to join the armed forces or engage in voluntary work by 2029. Under the Conservative plan, individuals in this age group would be obligated to serve a 12-month term in the military or cyber defense, or dedicate one weekend each month to community volunteerism.

The resurgence of mandatory national service proposes a significant shift from the current status quo, with implications for a generation not subject to such requirements since 1960. Population estimates indicate that approximately 830,000 18-year-olds in 2029 could be affected by this initiative.

Geographically, Birmingham would see the highest conscription rate, with over 17,000 18-year-olds targeted for service. Notably, Barking and Dagenham is projected to have the highest concentration of 18-year-olds, comprising 1.7% of the population in 2029, translating to approximately one in 59 individuals being eligible for National Service.

Supporting the reimposed National Service, Rishi Sunak asserts that it will foster a culture of service, bolster societal cohesion, and enhance the nation’s security and resilience. In contrast, Labour leader Keir Starmer criticizes the policy as “desperate” and anticipates the creation of a “teenage Dad’s Army.” The initiative emphasizes roughly 30,000 full-time military placements, with the majority of 18-year-olds expected to fulfill the obligatory community roles by collaborating with entities such as charities, the NHS, police, or fire services.

The proposal revives a practice that was active from 1949 to 1963 and saw over two million men conscripted into the British Armed forces.
