After three years of closure, there’s hope for the revival of the Royal Oak pub in Widcombe, Somerset. The Grade II listed venue on Summerlays Place, which has been shuttered since 2022, might soon see a new chapter under its fresh owner.
Plans to downsize the sprawling building are in motion to ensure its sustainability. The proposed transformation involves converting the former landlord’s flat into a separate two-bedroom home, repurposing the skittle alley into holiday lets, and maintaining the main bar, cellar, kitchens, and toilets.
The goal is to restore the pub’s vibrancy with a diversified revenue stream. The proposed independent residential units and holiday lets are envisioned to support the reopening and subsequent operation of the establishment.

The application emphasizes the historical significance and the social and economic value of reviving a local public house like The Royal Oak. It acknowledges the national trend of declining ‘local’ pubs and the necessity to adapt to local demand and prevent physical deterioration to ensure long-term viability.
The fate of the application lies with the Bath and North East Somerset Council planners, who will assess the proposed changes and decide on the future of this beloved community asset.
