Reviving an Icon: Historic Amulet Theatre Receives Vital Funding Boost

The historic Amulet Theatre, previously hidden from the spotlight, has received a vital cash injection from Theatres Trust, bringing it one step closer to reopening its doors to the public. The theatre, originally gifted by the Babycham brewing dynasty, is set to undergo crucial compliance and planning works, including fire risk assessments, emergency exit specifications, and building control plans, to pave the way for its restoration. The funding will also support temporary community events at the site while full restoration plans are being developed.

Theatres Trust, the national advisory and advocacy body for theatres in the UK, has allocated £6,000 to the Amulet Theatre as part of its Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities programme. This initiative aims to support the restoration and revival of historic theatres that are at risk, in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Pilgrim Trust, and the Swire Charitable Trust.

The Amulet Theatre, previously operating as a gym under private ownership, holds a special place in the hearts of its community. With the newfound funding, it is anticipated to regain its status as a live performance venue, enriching the cultural landscape of Shepton Mallet and beyond. This initiative not only seeks to increase organisational resilience and develop community engagement but also aims to equip the venue to withstand financial and logistical challenges.

The Amulet Centre Limited, the local group spearheading the restoration efforts, is optimistic that the funding will galvanize community support and breathe new life into one of Somerset’s most unusual cultural spaces.
