Yeovil’s taxi ranks are set to undergo significant changes in the next few months as part of the town’s broader regeneration effort. Somerset Council’s ongoing Yeovil Refresh programme aims to enhance the town center, making it more welcoming and accessible for visitors and businesses.
Funded by central government grants, the programme includes various projects such as the development of a new amphitheater, improvements to the cycle network, and the demolition of the vacant Glovers Walk shopping centre. Following a 12-month consultation period led by the licensing team, the council’s executive committee has approved sweeping alterations to Yeovil’s taxi and Hackney carriage ranks.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, portfolio holder for communities, culture, equalities, and diversity, explained the rationale behind the changes, highlighting the need to adapt taxi and carriage ranks to better serve the community both during the day and at night. The approved changes include the removal of the existing rank on Silver Street, with a new rank to be established on Princes Street, which will also see the alteration of the layout on Old Station Road. Meanwhile, additional night-time-only spaces will be created within the Stars Lane car park.

Councillor Faye Purbrick expressed support for the changes, except for the relocation of the rank from Silver Street to Princes Street, emphasizing potential implications for access to shops and mobility-challenged individuals. On the other hand, Councillor Tony Lock and Councillor David Woan highlighted the potential benefits of the changes, including the distribution of footfall and the positive impact on businesses in the relocated areas.
The reorganization of taxi ranks under the Yeovil Refresh programme signifies a step towards a more inclusive and accessible town center, enhancing the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.
