The Street Parish Council has embraced the responsibility of managing the weekly Street Market, a Thursday tradition. This change is part of Somerset Council’s effort to decentralize assets and services, empowering local communities and enhancing public service delivery.
While the Street Market does not have the historical backing of a Market Charter, the Street Parish Council has invoked its market rights under Part III of the Food Act 1984. To facilitate the market’s growth, two dedicated Market Officers, Matt and Craig, have been employed to oversee operations and help establish a vibrant, sustainable market for Street.
Despite being relatively young, the Street Market has already cultivated a distinct identity, anchored by a robust lineup of street food and specialty traders. Collaborating with the NABMA (National Association of British Market Authorities) and local traders, officers are evaluating the current offerings and crafting a strategic vision for the market’s future.

As part of the enhancement plan, the Council will engage with traders and residents and introduce essential signage to promote market awareness and alert drivers to High Street closures on market days. A formal review of the Market service is slated for six months, with the aim of developing a long-term Market Strategy to steer future growth.
With this revised management and operational approach, the Street Parish Council is dedicated to preserving the High Street as a vibrant space for traders, residents, and visitors. The Council is focused on expanding the market’s offerings and implementing improvements for the benefit of the entire community.
Bryan Knickerbocker, Chair of Street Parish Council, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to take on the management of Street Market. This presents a wonderful opportunity to enhance a market integral to our High Street’s identity and ensure its prosperity for years to come. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with traders and residents to further elevate Street Market in the times ahead.”
