Revitalization of Historic Somerset Canal Underway

The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, a historic waterway spanning just over 14 miles through the picturesque Somerset Levels, is set to undergo a significant transformation. With the commitment of millions of pounds in government funding and the adoption of a new strategic plan, the canal and its surrounding areas are poised for a revival.

The Bridgwater docks, a key focal point of the canal, will see substantial rejuvenation over the next 12 to 18 months, with £5.2m from the government-backed Bridgwater town deal allocated for modernization initiatives. These efforts will include the enhancement of the marina, the promotion of new leisure opportunities, and the improvement of pedestrian and cycling connections to the town center. Simultaneously, Somerset Council has ratified its Taunton waterways strategy, outlining a series of potential projects and extensive maintenance aimed at enhancing the Taunton segment of the canal.

The approved strategy places an emphasis on developing a “linear water park” that integrates the River Tone and the canal, fostering increased recreational usage for activities such as walking, cycling, and leisurely exploration of the town. The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has voiced its support for making the canal fully navigable by boat, citing the potential for substantial economic and cultural benefits for local communities.

Furthermore, the strategy highlights the need to revitalize the Firepool Lock in Taunton to accommodate more boats and craft, signaling a shift towards further harnessing the potential of the waterways. The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, currently under the stewardship of the Canal and River Trust, has also seen the reopening of its towpath in Bridgwater, following a multi-year closure due to safety concerns.

With the groundwork being laid for the canal’s rejuvenation, there is a concerted effort to foster collaboration among various stakeholders to address technical challenges and gain a deeper understanding of the associated costs. There is a clear recognition of the economic potential inherent in the revitalization of this historic waterway, with a vision to create a thriving and interconnected canal network that contributes to local businesses and enhances the overall appeal of the region.

As efforts to revitalize the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal gain momentum, inclusive of public consultations and planned infrastructure improvements, the vision of reinvigorating this historic waterway is steadily taking shape.
