‘Revised’ Housing Scheme Near Somerset Receives Mixed Reactions After Initial Rejection

Bewley Homes, an independent property developer, has unveiled revised designs for a housing estate near Holt, situated between Bradford-on-Avon and Melksham, following backlash against their initial proposal.

Earlier this year, Wiltshire Council’s western area planning committee dismissed the reserved matters application for 90 houses on land off Melksham Road. Local councillor Trevor Carbin notably criticized the initial design as “basically ugly.”

In response, Bewley Homes collaborated with Holt Parish Council to refine the plans. Key amendments include reducing the number of homes from 90 to 88, replacing three-storey flats with two-storey almshouse-style maisonettes, and incorporating a significant green space intended as the centerpiece of the development.

These revisions have garnered strong support, with the parish council expressing unanimous approval of the updated proposals.

Andrew Brooks, managing director of Bewley Homes, stated, “We have worked diligently with both the Parish Council and Wiltshire Council officers to address earlier concerns. This collaborative process has been constructive, and we look forward to a positive determination.”

He added, “Our plans not only provide much-needed family homes but also feature extensive public spaces, including a community orchard and a children’s playground. The designs have been carefully crafted to reflect Holt’s unique character while enhancing biodiversity and incorporating modern sustainability features.”

Steve Siddall, chair of Holt Parish Council, remarked, “The ongoing, genuine dialogue among the parish council, Bewley Homes, and planning officers has led to significant improvements in layout, materials, landscaping, housing variety, and style. The new designs better align with the character of our village, drawing inspiration from the Holt Village Character Statement.”

A final decision from Wiltshire Council on the application is anticipated by August 15.
