The Moorland Hall was buzzing this Easter as cups of tea and companionship flowed freely, thanks to a heartwarming initiative tackling isolation among older people. Around 25 guests, hosts, and drivers gathered in Wheddon Cross on Sunday, April 6, for a special Easter tea party organised by Re-engage, a national charity combating loneliness, and generously sponsored for the second year running by the NFU Mutual Williton and Rooksbridge Agency.
The event brought together the entire guest list of local Re-engage co-ordinator Renata Uraky, overcoming the usual space limitations of home-based monthly tea parties. Renata emphasized, “Re-engage is a national charity that gives older people the opportunity to make new friends and break the cycle of isolation. Thanks to the support of the NFU Mutual Williton and Rooksbridge again this year we were able to all be together.”
Helen Davies, marketing co-ordinator for the NFU Mutual agency, highlighted the value of the gathering for older residents in rural Exmoor, where distance and lack of transport often hinder social opportunities. “In rural areas such as Exmoor, it is hard for isolated older people to socialize, especially if they can no longer drive,” Helen said. “Last year’s Easter party was such a success we were more than happy to sponsor the event again and enjoy an afternoon of conversation and good company.”

Sally Parish, who has been volunteering as a host for more than a decade, helped out at the event and praised its joyful atmosphere. “It was a pleasure to help out at the Easter party and see so many of our guests together in one place. Hosting tea parties is so rewarding – who wouldn’t want to spend an afternoon eating cake and chatting?! We are really grateful to Helen and the NFU Mutual Williton & Rooksbridge team for sponsoring and running the afternoon, and supplying Easter eggs for everyone.”
The gathering featured festive treats, lively conversation, and, as shown in photos, more than a few pairs of novelty bunny ears worn by smiling volunteers.
