Restoration Efforts Underway for Exmoor Landslip as B3224 Prepares to Reopen

Somerset Council has been hard at work restoring the collapsed embankment near the B3224 in Exmoor, following a major landslip in the area.

Newly released images of the site between Exford and Wheddon Cross highlight the enormity of the task undertaken by the council’s contracted firm, Walters, who commenced work early last month.

The damage, a result of severe weather over two years ago, led to a landslip adjacent to the road edge, necessitating the implementation of lane closures and temporary traffic lights while the repairs were underway. The road is expected to reopen in May 2024, upon the completion of the renovation.

The images underscore the need for a road closure during the repair process, as the endeavor requires a 30-tonne piling plant that occupies a significant portion of the road. Additionally, a 50-tonne crane is being utilized, and approximately 150 tonnes of materials have been brought to the site.

After stabilizing the embankment, the next steps involve the installation of new drainage systems and resurfacing of the carriageway.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and digital, commented, “Repairing this embankment is an extensive undertaking, as I observed firsthand during a recent on-site visit. We are deeply appreciative of the support and understanding shown by local residents, community leaders, and businesses. Recognizing the impact of road closures, we are pleased to note the satisfactory progress and adherence to the established schedule. Upon completion and restoration of the embankment structure, the inconvenience of temporary lights and resulting delays for drivers on this busy route will finally be alleviated.”

As the road closure persists, a diversion is in place, with additional information available at www.somerset.gov.uk/travel.
