A bold new seagull mural has sparked debate among residents in Taunton’s town centre. The large, colorful artwork, depicting swooping seagulls stealing chips, was painted on the side of a local chip shop as part of an initiative to add vibrancy to the independent business area.
The project, funded by a £6,500 fundraiser led by local traders, was brought to life by Aerosol Art’s Sam Gaden. While some locals appreciate the mural’s charm and creativity, others are less enthusiastic.
One resident commented, “Love the mural, hate the birds—I have my reasons.” Others expressed frustration with the real-life seagulls, calling them a nuisance. “Isn’t it bad enough fighting them off daily? Do we need to see them painted on shops?” one remarked. Another quipped, “I’ve been done by the winged muggers countless times.”

Yet many embraced the art, with one admirer calling it “AMAZING” and appreciating the playful depiction of the ‘sneaky gull’ peering around the corner. Another praised the mural as “brilliant street art,” saying it perfectly captures the cheeky spirit of the town’s notorious chip-stealing birds.
The mural continues to divide opinion, but it undoubtedly adds a splash of colour and character to the heart of Taunton.
