Replacement Yeovil Junior School Set to Open Summer 2027

Plans for a new Milford Junior School in northern Yeovil have been approved, with construction slated for completion by summer 2027. The replacement school will serve 420 pupils and is designed to provide a modern, sustainable learning environment.

Milford Junior School, located on Glenthorne Avenue north of Yeovil town centre, dates back to the early 1950s. The original buildings were closed indefinitely in August 2022 due to structural issues. Since then, pupils have been taught in temporary classrooms on nearby playing fields, and most of the old school buildings were demolished in January 2023.

The Department for Education (DfE) secured planning permission from Somerset Council in late August 2025 to demolish the remaining structures and build a new facility. Construction began in late October 2025, with Tilbury Douglas appointed as the main contractor.

Property consultants Carter Jonas announced that amended plans have been approved, confirming the school’s opening by summer 2027. The new two-storey school will be net zero carbon, featuring solar panels, a ground-source heat pump, and a green roof designed to retain heat.

Additional amenities will include a multi-use games area (MUGA), upgraded playing fields, improved cycle parking, enhanced biodiversity measures, and dedicated parking spaces. The school site is adjacent to Milford Infants School and part of the Yeovil Area Community Academy Trust, which also includes Huish Primary School and Primrose Lane Primary School.

Willow Mercer, associate in planning and development at Carter Jonas, commented: “Securing planning consent for this important educational facility is a major milestone. Pupils will soon move from temporary accommodations into a purpose-built, sustainable school that will serve the community for generations.”

Paul Gale, south west regional director at Tilbury Douglas, added: “Our commitment is to deliver a school that meets the highest standards of design and sustainability. This net-zero carbon approach, with enhanced biodiversity and community features, will provide an outstanding educational environment for Yeovil’s children.”

The project is expected to be completed by early summer 2027, enabling the new intake in September to benefit fully from the advanced facilities.
