A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for causing a fatal crash while driving under the influence in Keynsham. The collision took place on January 21 when Thomas Hardyman, three times over the legal drink-drive limit, veered into the opposite lane on the B3116 Burnett Hill, leading to a head-on collision with a Peugeot van driven by Julian Cole.
Dashcam footage from Hardyman’s vehicle revealed his erratic driving moments before the collision, capturing several instances of him drifting into the opposite lane. The tragic event resulted in the death of Mr. Cole, while a passenger in the van and occupants of another vehicle involved in the subsequent collision escaped physical harm.
In a January hearing, Hardyman admitted guilt to causing death by careless driving. This isn’t his first offense, with a previous drink-driving conviction in 2024, seven months after the fatal collision. In addition to the prison sentence, Hardyman will face an eight-year driving ban and must pass an extended re-test to regain his license.
