Bath Rugby has secured a significant boost to its squad by re-signing Sam Underhill, the formidable England international flanker, for two more seasons. Known globally for his relentless defense and powerful tackling, Underhill’s extended commitment supports head coach Johann van Graan’s vision of establishing a dominant era at the club, especially following their historic treble-winning 2024/25 season.
Underhill’s rugby journey began early; he made his professional debut at 18, gaining experience at Gloucester and Ospreys before joining Bath in 2017. Despite facing challenges with injuries, he has amassed an impressive 117 appearances for Bath and earned 48 caps representing England at the international level.
Johann van Graan praised Underhill, stating, “Sam is a world-class player universally recognized for his physicality in contact. Beyond his on-field impact, he is integral to our club culture and ambitions. We are thrilled to have him continue this journey with us.”

This new contract follows the confirmed departure of openside flanker Ethan Staddon to Bristol Bears, whose path to regular first-team rugby was limited by the presence of established internationals like Underhill, Guy Pepper, and the ever-reliable Miles Reid.
At just 29, Underhill expressed his enthusiasm about his future at Bath: “Bath has become home for my family and me. It’s a fantastic club and city with wonderful people. I’m incredibly grateful to continue this journey and excited about what lies ahead.”
With this extension, Underhill’s tenure at Bath is set to exceed a decade, solidifying his place as a key figure in Bath Rugby’s ongoing pursuit of success.
