Renovation Campaign for Wells Scout Hut Gains Momentum

The Wells Scout Hut, nestled in the Blue School grounds, has been a hub of activity for over 40 years, but it’s now facing urgent renovation needs. With 130 young people utilizing the aging facility each week and another 70 on the waiting list, the building’s inadequacies are increasingly evident. Lead volunteer Heather Anderson highlighted several pressing issues, including the lack of level access, outdated and unwelcoming toilet facilities, noise-related stress for individuals with sensory issues, and the presence of asbestos in the ceiling, necessitating specialized removal.

In response to the critical state of the Scout Hut, Wells Mayor Jasmine Browne has pledged her support by selecting Wells Scouts as her Mayor’s Charity for the year. Having witnessed firsthand the positive impact of scouting on her own children, Browne is eager to champion the cause, emphasizing the opportunities and life skills it offers to young people.

Local architect Nigel Clarke has also stepped in to support the renovation effort, generously offering his expertise to design new, improved toilet facilities. Efforts to secure funds for the extensive refurbishment are underway, with a charity concert organized by Mayor Browne and donations from local businesses set to make significant contributions.
