The community of Wells is mourning the loss of Garry White, a committed firefighter who dedicated 33 years of his life to serving and protecting the people of Somerset. Beginning his service in 1982, Garry was an influential figure at the Wells Fire and Rescue Team until his retirement in 2015. Even after stepping down from active duty, Garry continued to support and train the next generation of firefighters. The Wells Fire Station fondly remembers him as an irreplaceable presence, greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Following the station’s heartwarming tribute on Facebook, an outpouring of condolences flooded in from individuals touched by Garry’s kindness and professionalism. Both former colleagues and community members highlighted his selfless dedication and warm-hearted nature. One individual shared, “Sad news. Served with him until 1990 then alongside attending jobs as a paramedic. A big-hearted, well-loved man.” Another reminisced, “God bless Garry. I joined Shepton the same year Garry joined Wells. We did our basic training together. A lovely man.”
Garry’s impact also extended to his family, as his daughter affectionately expressed, “My dad was always so proud to be in the fire service. It was his life.”
