Relaxed Picnic and Celebration of Local Produce at Somerset Food Trail Festival

Chard’s Great Mead is set to host a laid-back outdoor gathering as part of the Somerset Food Trail Festival. On Sunday, July 20, from 12 noon to 3 pm, families and friends can enjoy the Family Feast Picnic—an afternoon filled with music, fresh local produce, and nature-inspired activities just a short stroll from Chard town centre.

Visitors are invited to bring their own picnics, ideally using ingredients sourced from within 30 miles of their home, embracing the event’s “30-Mile Feast Challenge.” This focus on local and sustainable food highlights the importance of supporting nearby producers and reducing environmental impact.

The musical lineup includes Oconee Bell, a West Country band known for their vibrant folk and Americana tunes that are sure to get toes tapping. Attendees can also take guided walks around the peaceful Great Mead area, located beside Holyrood Academy and Glynswood, adding a refreshing touch of nature to the celebration.

Ingrid and Mark, co-managers of the project, shared their enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to partner with the Somerset Food Trail Festival for this family feast picnic. It’s a fantastic chance for the people of Chard to appreciate the natural beauty of Great Mead while enjoying good food and great company.”

The event is free and open to all, with no booking required. For more details, visit www.greatmead.org.
