Regency Christmas Returns as Mompesson House Revives Festive Traditions

Step back in time this holiday season at Mompesson House in Salisbury’s Cathedral Close, where the spirit of a Regency Christmas is brought vividly to life. From November 21 to December 23, this beautifully preserved 18th-century townhouse invites visitors to immerse themselves in the festive customs of the early 1800s, with celebrations running Fridays through Tuesdays from 11 am to 3:30 pm.

Each room in the house tells a unique story of Regency holiday traditions, offering a captivating glimpse into the past. The dining room dazzles with a recreation of a traditional Christmas Day feast, while the expansive drawing room transforms into a lively Twelfth Night ball, echoing the grand parties of the era.

The decorations themselves are a tribute to the period’s aesthetic, featuring lush seasonal greenery, delicate glass baubles, handmade paper ornaments, and a magnificent garland adorning the oak staircase, creating an enchanting atmosphere throughout.

Georgiana Cooper, collections and house officer at Mompesson House, shares her enthusiasm: “Exploring the traditions of a Regency Christmas has been delightful. We’ve added our own touch of Mompesson magic to ensure every room sparkles. We hope visitors will enjoy the experience as much as we have enjoyed creating it.”

Families are especially welcomed with a variety of engaging activities, including a Twelfth Night character spotting trail, opportunities to dress as a Regency-era servant in the library, and festive bauble decorating in the upstairs green room.

After exploring, guests can relax in the tea room with a hot drink and seasonal treats, or browse the second-hand bookshop for perfect holiday gifts.
