‘Reckless’ Driver, 19, Convicted in Tragic Weston-super-Mare Crash That Killed ‘Brilliant Young Man’

A tragic incident unfolded near Weston-super-Mare when a reckless 19-year-old driver, Kasper Stankiewicz from Congresbury, was found guilty of causing the death of 18-year-old motorbike rider Alfie Gray.

The fatal crash occurred on September 10, 2024, on the A370 near Puxton Park, as Alfie Gray was riding home from work. According to Avon and Somerset Police, Stankiewicz was travelling in the opposite direction when he overtook a vehicle by moving onto the wrong side of the road, colliding head-on with Gray’s motorbike.

Following a three-day trial at Bristol Crown Court, the jury unanimously convicted Stankiewicz of causing Alfie’s death. Although he has been released on bail, he faces sentencing at the same court on July 9, 2024. Meanwhile, a temporary driving ban has been imposed pending this hearing.

Designated Investigation Officer Zoe Wilkinson expressed deep condolences, emphasizing the devastating impact of losing such a young life. “Alfie was a brilliant young man with his whole life ahead of him. His family and friends have shown remarkable strength throughout this heartbreaking process,” she said.

The defence argued that Stankiewicz’s manoeuvre was not dangerous but a case of careless driving. However, the jury rejected this and held him accountable for his reckless actions, which tragically ended Alfie’s life.
