Somerset captain Tom Kohler-Cadmore expressed his delight after his side delivered a commanding team performance to defeat Northamptonshire by 105 runs, keeping their hopes alive of defending the T20 Blast title.
Needing victory in all their remaining matches to qualify for the next stage, Somerset faced an unbeaten Northamptonshire side on their home ground at the cinch County Ground. Somerset set a challenging total of 223 for four, powered by a rapid opening stand of 104 between Thomas Rew, who scored his maiden T20 half-century with 57 runs, and Will Smeed, who contributed 48. Despite losing both openers quickly, Australian Daniel Sams ignited the innings late, scoring an explosive 48 off 16 balls to push Somerset to an imposing total.
Northamptonshire started briskly with Ricardo Vasconcelos hitting 40, but tight bowling from Craig Overton in the powerplay applied scoreboard pressure. Wickets fell consistently, with Josh Thomas claiming career-best figures of four for six, and Lewis Goldsworthy taking three wickets in one over, effectively dismantling the Steelbacks' chase and bowling them out for 118.

Kohler-Cadmore praised the entire team’s contribution: “We’ve been urging players to stand up and contribute, and it was refreshing that this wasn’t about individual brilliance alone but a collective effort. The top partnership set a strong foundation, James Rew maintained his form, and Sams’s late onslaught put the opposition under immense pressure.”
He continued, “That final surge in runs massively shifted momentum. Chasing 200 would have been tough but feasible, but adding those extra 20 runs made the target daunting. On the bowling front, Overton’s disciplined spell, particularly his wicket-maiden in the fifth over, was pivotal. Then Goldsworthy and Thomas came on attacking and delivered crucial breakthroughs.”
Reflecting on the recent downturn in form, Kohler-Cadmore said, “After the loss to Worcester—the worst performance I’ve seen at the club—we regrouped. With only a few games left, winning them all is essential. We’ve faced injuries and disruptions, losing experience and welcoming new players, so it’s been a learning curve. But if we maintain aggression and back our skills, we can still reach the knockouts.”
Somerset’s next challenge is an away game against Derbyshire, another must-win fixture as they push to secure a quarter-final spot. Kohler-Cadmore added, “Our group is tough, and we’ve put ourselves in a position where we can’t afford mistakes. We haven’t faced Derbyshire in a while, so adapting to their conditions will be key to success.”
