Somerset captain Tom Kohler-Cadmore expressed his delight after his side delivered a commanding team performance, defeating Northamptonshire by 105 runs to keep their T20 Blast title defense alive.
The reigning champions arrived at the cinch County Ground with everything to play for, needing to win all their remaining fixtures to maintain a chance of qualification. They were up against an undefeated Northamptonshire side on their home turf but quickly ended the Steelbacks’ unbeaten streak by setting a formidable total of 223 for four and then bowling them out for just 118.
Thanks to other results, Somerset now face a scenario where winning their last three matches—against Derbyshire (away), Northamptonshire (home), and Worcestershire (home)—is critical. Their progress to the quarter-finals may only be denied by net run rate, underscoring the importance of every performance.

Kohler-Cadmore praised the collective effort, noting how multiple players contributed significantly throughout the game. Thomas Rew stood out with a blazing maiden T20 half-century, scoring 57 during a dynamic 104-run opening partnership with Will Smeed (48). After their dismissal in quick succession, Australian international Daniel Sams accelerated the innings with a rapid 48 off 16 balls, pushing Somerset to an imposing total.
Northamptonshire’s Ricardo Vasconcelos started strongly with a quick 40, but disciplined bowling from Somerset altered the momentum quickly. Craig Overton led the charge with a miserly spell during the powerplay, while Josh Thomas impressed with career-best figures of four wickets for six runs. Lewis Goldsworthy’s impactful over, taking three wickets, further tilted the game in Somerset’s favor.
“We’ve been encouraging players to stand up and contribute, and it was refreshing that the victory wasn’t down to just one individual,” said Kohler-Cadmore. “From the opening partnership of Smeed and Rew to Sams’ explosive finish, everyone chipped in. The way we added those extra runs shifted the momentum massively, making the target much tougher for Northamptonshire.”
He continued, “Our bowling was outstanding as well. Craig Overton set the tone with a wicket maiden in the fifth over, and then Goldsworthy and Thomas backed that up with relentless attack. It’s great to see younger players like Josh Thomas come in full of confidence and perform so well.”
Reflecting on their disappointing loss to Worcester earlier in the tournament, Kohler-Cadmore emphasized the team’s resolve to bounce back. “That was probably the worst performance I’ve seen since joining the club. But with only three games left to play and everything on the line, we had a clean slate and nothing to lose. It’s time to be aggressive and back our skills. Despite injuries and squad changes throughout the season, we’re learning a lot, and if we win these last matches, we’ll head into the knockouts in a strong position.”
Looking ahead, Somerset prepare for another vital fixture away at Derbyshire. Kohler-Cadmore said, “Our group is really competitive, and we can’t afford any slip-ups. Adapting to conditions will be key, especially since we haven’t played Derbyshire in some time. But we’re ready to take on the challenge and fight for our spot in the next stage.”
