Rain, Runs, and Rally: Taunton Baseball Season Nears Its Climax

Taunton Baseball Club experienced a weekend of highs and lows, with rain interruptions impacting the schedule and mixed outcomes for their two senior squads.

On Sunday, July 27, heavy rain cut short a doubleheader against the Plymouth Mariners. Only the opening game reached completion, ending in a high-scoring 24–11 victory for Plymouth. The second game was halted with the Mariners leading 1–0 and is scheduled to be resumed next Sunday.

The first game unfolded in a flurry of action, with both teams exchanging hits and runs early on. The Mariners held a 14–7 advantage going into the final inning before pulling away with a decisive 10-run rally. The Pistols scored four runs in response but couldn’t narrow the deficit.

Despite the loss, Taunton had standout contributors. Mark Cross tallied two hits and three RBIs, including a powerful double. Melissa Morgan-Clarke also drove in three runs from two hits, while Steve Coles added three hits and scored three times.

Pistols assistant manager Connor Colman acknowledged the tough result but remained optimistic: “It’s been a solid season overall. We’re hopeful to complete the second game with a win when it’s rearranged.”

James Wheatley earned the Tricky Cider Ltd MVP award for his reliable batting and defensive efforts throughout the season.

Meanwhile, in the Double-A division, the Taunton Muskets advanced straight to the championship round after their opponents, the Wellington Khaki Sox, forfeited due to an inability to field a team.

The Muskets are set to face the Cardiff Merlins in the division final on Sunday, August 10. Both teams will also compete in the British Baseball Federation Double-A playoffs later in the month, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the season.
