Somerset’s quest for a third Rothesay County Championship win this season was thwarted by rain during their Division One clash against Sussex at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton. After declaring at a commanding 526 for eight, Somerset hoped to dismiss Sussex and claim victory, but the weather had other plans.
Sussex resumed their first innings on 236 for eight, trailing by 290 runs, and managed only 17 more runs before being forced to follow on. In their second innings, Sussex struggled early, slipping to 111 for seven by tea, with Craig Overton dismantling their lineup by taking three wickets for 14 runs from his 13 overs.
The final session began with Sussex adding just two runs before rain intervened, bringing play to an abrupt end. Somerset earned 15 points, reflecting their dominance, while Sussex took 10 points despite an underwhelming performance.

The day started with Somerset wrapping up the last two wickets of Sussex’s first innings swiftly. James Coles fell to Alfie Ogborne, edging to second slip, and Henry Crocombe was caught at first slip off Lewis Gregory. Under floodlights and with clouds looming, Sussex’s second innings began cautiously with Daniel Hughes and Tom Haines at the crease.
However, both batsmen fell to uncharacteristic mistakes before lunch. Haines, attempting a big drive, edged Ogborne to Gregory, and Hughes cut straight to Migael Pretorius at backward point. By lunch, Tom Clark and Jack Leaning had steadied the innings at 65 for two, with Clark unbeaten on 25, as there was no sign yet of the forecasted rain.
The afternoon session continued with Sussex’s fragile batsmen falling regularly. Leaning miscued a defensive shot to Ogborne, who took a catch at mid-wicket, and Clark was dismissed lbw by Overton after a gritty 34 off 95 balls. Sussex’s troubles mounted as Overton claimed another wicket, with Coles edged caught by Tom Abell at first slip, despite improving light conditions.
Somerset’s concerns over floodlight failures were momentarily eased before darkness returned, forcing an umpires’ consultation. Spin bowling from Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan continued to pressure Sussex. Vaughan struck again, bowling Charlie Tear for six.
The floodlights returned at 3:15 pm, allowing Somerset to bring back their seamers. Ogborne quickly trapped Fynn Hudson-Prentice lbw for five. Sussex’s John Simpson was left stranded on 11 runs after facing 59 balls as tea was taken with around 36 overs left in the day.
Unfortunately, as play resumed, rain soon arrived, washing out most of the final session. Only ten balls were bowled before drizzle forced players off the field. Persistent rain meant no further play was possible, and the match concluded in a draw at 5:50 pm, much to Somerset’s frustration.
