The extraordinary “Inspiration” exhibition train, commemorating 200 years of the modern railway, has arrived at Bishops Lydeard station on the West Somerset Railway, offering free access to an engaging family-friendly experience.

On static display until Friday, November 29, this vibrant four-carriage train is part of the national “Railway 200” celebrations and showcases railway science, history, and technology. Created in collaboration with the National Railway Museum, it provides an interactive exploration of railway innovations, careers, and heritage that has delighted visitors across the UK.

Admission is free but requires advance booking through the West Somerset Railway website or by phone at 01643 704996.

In addition to the Inspiration train, visitors can explore the Gauge Museum at the station, featuring notable exhibits such as a restored Great Western Railway sleeping car—a key piece of the West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust’s Heritage Carriages Project. School groups will have dedicated visits as part of the Trust’s educational outreach.

A heated marquee alongside the exhibits offers a pop-up café and gift shop, perfect for picking up festive souvenirs.

To improve access, a complimentary shuttle service operates on Monday, November 25, and Friday, November 29, running between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard. Shuttle seats are limited to visitors holding Inspiration train tickets.

The celebration continues on Saturday, November 29, with a steam train departing Bishops Lydeard at 10:30 a.m. to the Christmas Market at Minehead Station, stopping at Williton and Watchet. This marks the beginning of the West Somerset Railway’s Festive Trains program.

For more information on festive journeys, visit the railway’s website or call 01643 704996. Leaflets detailing schedules are also available at local information centers.

Looking to the future, West Somerset Railway is set to mark its own 50th anniversary in 2026, continuing the proud tradition of railway heritage in the region.
