On the evening of Saturday, July 11, five fire crews from across Somerset battled a large and rapidly spreading fire near Ilminster. The blaze, which erupted in the Winterhay Lane area, sent dramatic plumes of thick smoke soaring above the countryside, capturing attention for miles.
Firefighters from Chard, Martock, Yeovil, and Taunton fire stations arrived swiftly to find conifer trees, hedgerows, grassland, and an electricity pylon ablaze. The dry weather conditions intensified the fire’s spread, creating a challenging and dangerous environment.
Using an array of specialized equipment—including three hose reel jets, six breathing apparatus sets, thermal imaging cameras, beaters, and a 51mm jet—the teams worked tirelessly to contain the fire. Due to the fire’s magnitude and the remote location, additional support was requested from Bridgwater Fire Station in the form of a Water Carrier to ensure an adequate water supply.

After several hours of rigorous effort, firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze and thoroughly dampened the area to prevent any risk of reignition. Chard Fire Station shared updates and photos on social media around 9pm, highlighting both the scale of the damage and the swift response.
In light of the incident, Chard Fire Station reiterated vital safety advice for residents: “With dry and warm weather, open fires can start easily and spread quickly. Please dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid using disposable barbecues in wild areas, and always fully supervise and extinguish bonfires. If you see a fire, call 999 immediately.”
This fire stands as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by dry weather and the importance of vigilance to protect Somerset’s countryside.
