A massive fire swept through the Ilminster area of Somerset on Saturday evening, July 11, as five fire crews rushed to contain towering plumes of smoke and rapidly spreading flames. Responding to reports from Winterhay Lane, teams from Chard, Martock, Yeovil, and Taunton fire stations discovered an intense blaze engulfing conifer trees, hedgerows, grassland, and even an electricity pylon.
The dry weather significantly fueled the fire’s spread, causing widespread damage visible from miles around. Dramatic images shared by Chard Fire Station showed thick smoke filling the sky as firefighters battled to stop the fire from advancing further into the countryside.
Utilizing three hose reel jets, six breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras, beaters, and a powerful 51mm jet, crews worked relentlessly to bring the flames under control. To ensure adequate water supply in the challenging terrain, Bridgwater Fire Station dispatched an additional Water Carrier to support the operation.

By 9pm, the fire was extinguished, and crews thoroughly dampened the affected area to prevent any chance of reignition. Following the incident, Chard Fire Station issued an urgent safety reminder highlighting the dangers of dry conditions. They urged residents to dispose of cigarettes responsibly, avoid disposable BBQs in wild areas, supervise bonfires closely, and immediately report any open fires by calling 999.
This event underscores the critical importance of fire safety during unusually warm and dry spells, as even a small spark can swiftly turn into a devastating inferno.
