A fierce fire erupted in Somerset’s Ilminster area on the evening of Saturday, July 11, drawing five fire crews to battle an expanding blaze that engulfed hedgerows, grassland, and woodland. Chard Fire Station responded promptly after receiving reports of the fire in the Winterhay Lane vicinity.
Firefighters from Chard, Martock, Yeovil, and Taunton stations arrived to find a substantial area ablaze, including conifer trees, hedgerows, grassland, and even an electricity pylon, all rapidly consumed due to the ongoing dry conditions. Massive smoke plumes were visible from miles away as the fire tore through the countryside, scorching vegetation and threatening nearby infrastructure.
To combat the blaze, crews deployed a variety of equipment including three hose reel jets, six breathing apparatus units, thermal imaging cameras, beaters, and a powerful 51mm jet. Given the demanding terrain and size of the fire, a Water Carrier from Bridgwater Fire Station was also called in to maintain a steady water supply.

After intense efforts, firefighters succeeded in extinguishing the fire and thoroughly dampened the area to prevent any chance of reignition. The incident was officially reported by Chard Fire Station on social media around 9pm, alongside a vital safety warning.
The fire service emphasized the increased risk of wildfires during warm, dry spells and urged the public to act responsibly. They reminded residents to dispose of cigarettes carefully, avoid disposable BBQs in natural areas, and ensure bonfires are fully supervised and completely extinguished. Immediate reporting of any open fires to emergency services remains crucial.
