RAC Urges UK Drivers to Perform Essential Car Checks Ahead of Bank Holiday Weekend

As the bank holiday weekend approaches, many UK families are gearing up for staycations and road trips. While the excitement builds, the RAC is urging motorists to take a moment to carry out critical safety checks before hitting the road.

RAC experts recommend three key checks every driver should complete before setting off. In a recent Facebook video, RAC’s specialist Nick advised motorists on what to inspect to ensure their vehicles are ready for the journey.

When asked about the top three checks to perform, Nick responded: “First, check the tyres—both their condition and pressure. Next, verify your coolant level is correct. Finally, check your oil level to make sure it’s at the proper mark.”

Nick also reassured drivers that if they encounter any vehicle issues, RAC’s mobile mechanics are available to assist, even providing on-the-spot checks at your home before departure.

The RAC emphasized the importance of these checks in the video’s caption, stating: “Hitting the roads this bank holiday? Before you set off, here are three quick car checks to help keep your journey smooth, safe and road trip ready.”

Longer trips and additional weight from luggage and passengers can place extra demands on a vehicle, making these checks especially crucial during summer road travel. Ensuring your car is in good condition can prevent breakdowns and promote a safer, more enjoyable journey.

Additionally, the RAC offers guidance on essential items to pack for road trips, including important documents, a sat nav, change for tolls or parking, a first-aid kit, a torch, and refreshments. On sunny days, sunglasses are recommended to reduce glare and improve driving comfort.

To maintain vehicle balance and safety, the RAC advises distributing weight evenly. Heavier items should be placed centrally, larger items should go towards the rear, and cargo should never be stacked above headrest level to avoid obstructing rear visibility or causing injury in sudden stops.

With nearly 19 million drivers expected on the roads this May bank holiday—the busiest in two years—the RAC’s advice aims to help motorists travel safely and confidently.
