RAC Urges UK Drivers to Perform Crucial Safety Checks Ahead of Bank Holiday Travel

With the bank holiday weekend upon us, millions of UK families are gearing up for staycations and road trips. While the excitement builds, the RAC is urging all drivers to carry out essential safety checks before setting off on their journeys.

In a recent video shared on Facebook, RAC expert Nick highlighted three vital checks every motorist should complete before travelling. When asked about the top checks, Nick emphasized: “First, inspect your tyres—ensure they are in good condition and properly inflated. Next, check the coolant level to confirm it’s at the correct mark. Finally, verify your oil level is adequate.”

Nick also reassured drivers that if they notice any issues, RAC’s mobile mechanics are ready to assist, offering vehicle inspections directly at your home before you leave.

The importance of these checks is underscored by the added strain that long distances and extra passengers or luggage can place on vehicles. The RAC reminds drivers that thorough preparation is crucial for a safe road trip, especially during busy periods like the bank holiday.

In addition to vehicle checks, the RAC recommends packing key items to enhance safety and comfort. Essentials include important documents, a sat nav, loose change, a first-aid kit, a torch, and sufficient food and drink. On sunny days, sunglasses are advised to reduce glare and protect your eyes.

The RAC also offers practical advice on loading your vehicle: heavier items should be placed towards the centre, with larger items positioned at the back. Avoid stacking items above headrest level to maintain clear rear visibility and prevent potential injury from unsecured objects in sudden stops.

With nearly 19 million Brits expected to be on the roads during this bank holiday—the busiest in two years—the RAC’s timely reminder aims to help everyone enjoy a smooth, safe, and stress-free journey.
