Public Consultation on Proposed Parking Changes in North Somerset

The North Somerset Council has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to parking across the region. The aim is to introduce new parking charges to various car parks and on-street parking locations in order to address a funding gap and enhance maintenance and enforcement of parking facilities.

Among the locations that could see the implementation of parking charges are car parks in Clevedon, Portishead, and Nailsea town centres, as well as on-street parking in these areas. The consultation also seeks feedback on the introduction of a new short-stay parking permit designed to promote local shopping and support the local economy.

Residents are being asked about their preferences regarding where parking charges should be applicable, the reasonable pricing for parking, and the potential usage of a parking smartphone app. The council is also encouraging business owners to provide their input on how the proposed parking charges could impact their operations and staff.

Councillor Hannah Young, Executive Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, emphasized the importance of gathering diverse perspectives to shape the parking proposals. The council is facing financial challenges and aims to use the revenue from parking charges to cover maintenance costs and improve enforcement of parking restrictions. Additionally, the introduction of parking charges is intended to encourage sustainable travel and shorter journeys by foot or bicycle.

The consultation is open for feedback until midday Tuesday 7 May 2024, and the council is hosting drop-in information events to engage with residents. Participants can share their thoughts through the online questionnaire provided by North Somerset Council.
