Pub Bought During Covid Pandemic Flourishes in Somerset Village, Visited by Emmerdale Star

The Lion, a historic pub nestled in the quaint Somerset village of West Pennard, is proving that resilience and community spirit can overcome even the toughest times. Purchased during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 by Barrie Wilson, The Lion has not only survived but thrived, becoming a cherished gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Dating back some 450 years, The Lion boasts rich character, including a reputedly haunted fireplace that adds to its unique charm. Located between Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet, the pub underwent a thorough refurbishment during lockdown, a period that allowed Barrie—armed with over 20 years of hospitality experience and a passion for interior design—to refresh the establishment’s look while retaining its traditional British appeal.

This dedication has paid off, with The Lion being nominated among Somerset’s top 50 pubs and bars as part of the Pub of the Year awards, voted for by SomersetLive readers. The nomination highlights the pub’s role as a vibrant social hub, appreciated for its welcoming atmosphere and tailored beer selections that cater to the tastes of its loyal patrons.

The pub’s menu is equally impressive. Signature dishes like pan-seared duck breast and their celebrated fish and chips—made with gluten-free flour and cider batter, and featuring hand-cut, triple-cooked chips—have earned high praise from guests.

Adding to its star-studded connections, The Lion enjoys the patronage of Chris Chittell, the longest-serving cast member of ITV’s Emmerdale, who once visited to promote their croissants, delighting the community and adding to the pub’s memorable moments.

For Barrie Wilson and his dedicated team, winning Somerset’s Pub of the Year would be a tremendous honor, recognizing their hard work and the pub’s importance to village life. Beyond the accolades, Barrie emphasizes the critical need to support local pubs in today’s changing landscape. As traditional British pubs face ongoing challenges, places like The Lion remain vital for preserving social connection and cultural identity.

With a warm welcome, a rich history, eclectic yet comforting fare, and a community spirit that shines through, The Lion continues to be a beacon of local pride and hospitality in Somerset.
