Chilton Bridge School, a private boarding institution in Yeovil specialising in education for children with disabilities, is planning a significant expansion. Currently charging fees exceeding £64,000 annually, the school has 91 pupils enrolled but aims to increase this number to 130 to address a rising demand for special needs placements, according to a recent Ofsted report.
The expansion proposal comes as local authorities seek more specialist education places. Inspectors noted, “The school is requesting a material change to increase pupil numbers. This is in response to demand from local authorities for places. The proprietor’s rationale and plans to accommodate the material change are well considered and thoroughly planned for.”
Currently admitting children from the age of six, Chilton Bridge primarily enrolls pupils aged 10 and above. The planned increase will enable the school to welcome younger pupils starting at age eight, reflecting where demand has grown. The leadership team has thoughtfully prepared the curriculum and ensured appropriate staffing and expertise to support the younger cohort.

Ofsted expects the growth to be “gradual and well managed.” The school places a strong emphasis on pupil well-being, carefully integrating new students to support smooth transitions. Planned expansion includes increasing full-time staff from 19 to 27, enhancing facilities with additions such as a performance area, science room, and a new communal space. The extensive grounds and wooded areas of the school provide an enriching environment for its students.
Rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2023, Chilton Bridge is praised for creating a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where pupils feel safe and respected. Many students have overcome previous negative educational experiences and flourish here. Parents report noticeable positive changes, with one saying their child is “a different child” since attending.
Leaders at Chilton Bridge are committed to rebuilding trust in education, fostering confidence and achievement in all pupils. As one student shared, the school has helped his confidence “go through the roof!”
