Bishop Henderson Church of England School, a primary school in Radstock educating around 130 pupils aged four to eleven, has been advised to make significant improvements following a recent Ofsted inspection. The report highlighted “the legacy of a weak curriculum” as a key factor contributing to gaps in pupils’ knowledge, particularly in reading, writing, and mathematics at key stage 2.
The inspection revealed that older pupils face challenges due to these gaps, which hinder their ability to learn effectively and achieve high standards. This stands in contrast to the early years and key stage 1, where students generally secure foundational skills in literacy and numeracy, including reading, writing, number facts, and mental arithmetic.
Ofsted’s findings pointed to ongoing weaknesses across the curriculum, noting the need to better address gaps in essential skills like handwriting, punctuation, and spelling among older students. The report also criticized the school’s deployment of staff and resource allocation, which, at times, fails to provide consistent support for pupils, particularly those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

While the school has made efforts to strengthen its curriculum since the previous inspection, the support system for SEND pupils was found lacking. Inspectors observed that the impact of SEND provisions is not monitored closely enough, resulting in an unclear understanding of how well these pupils are progressing. Consequently, staff lack sufficient guidance to tailor support to individual needs, meaning some pupils with SEND do not advance as well as expected.
Despite these concerns, the report commended several positive aspects of Bishop Henderson. Inspectors praised its caring ethos, warm relationships, and high-quality pastoral care. The school’s rich extra-curricular program, which includes clubs such as archery, gardening, choir, and a rock band, was also highlighted as a strength.
Additionally, the school was recognized for its efforts to teach students about challenging stereotypes, staying safe online, and respecting other faiths. Inspectors expressed admiration for the school’s house system, which fosters community and engagement among pupils.
