Acorns Preschool in Somerset, located at the United Reformed Church Hall in Bower Hinton near Yeovil, has earned a ‘Good’ rating across the board in its recent Ofsted inspection conducted on January 22. Serving children aged two to four, the setting, which has capacity for 24 children with seven currently enrolled, was lauded for its nurturing environment where children feel emotionally secure and thrive both developmentally and socially.
Inspectors highlighted the strong, affectionate bonds between staff and children that create a foundation for effective learning. Staff were praised as excellent role models who encourage positive behavior and foster strong peer relationships. Children are encouraged to take an active role in their own learning by making choices and developing independence.
A standout example in the curriculum featured a firefighter-themed activity where children listened to a story about fire officers, then extended their learning through imaginative role-play, dressing up as firefighters and using new vocabulary. This activity was reinforced when children recalled it during outdoor play, demonstrating engagement and memory.

Staff demonstrate a clear understanding of learning objectives and employ effective teaching methods. For instance, during a craft session focused on using scissors, staff modeled techniques and provided ample time and encouragement for children to practice, resulting in children concentrating deeply, persevering, and gaining confidence in mastering the skill.
A key strength noted in the report was staff’s continuous observation and support tailored to individual development. They monitor progress closely, identify needs early, and collaborate successfully with parents and external agencies to ensure every child makes consistent progress.
The preschool fosters confident communication skills, with staff enriching vocabulary, gently correcting speech, and promoting meaningful conversations. While children are supported in counting, inspectors noted an opportunity to enhance mathematical language use and provide greater challenges for more advanced learners.
Children’s behavior and personal growth were rated ‘Good.’ They learn to manage their emotions, respect others, share, and follow safety rules—such as not running indoors and using quiet voices to maintain a calm environment.
Independence is a key focus, with children encouraged to manage their coats, practice good hygiene, and discuss healthy habits. The setting supports good health practices, including drinking fluids regularly, blowing noses, disposing of tissues properly, and talking about nutrition and dental care.
Leadership and management were commended for ongoing self-evaluation and improvements, such as tailoring the environment to engage boys more effectively and enhancing communication with parents. Inspectors suggested that gathering parents’ feedback more regularly could drive further advancements.
The committee overseeing the preschool offers strong support for staff development and training, especially in special educational needs and disabilities. Although some administrative paperwork was incomplete, this did not affect children, and no action was planned by Ofsted.
Safeguarding is robust, with a transparent, positive culture that prioritizes children’s welfare at all times.
This positive inspection result maintains Acorns Preschool’s reputation for excellence since their previous ‘Good’ rating in April 2019, underscoring their commitment to nurturing happy, confident, and eager learners.
