Preparing for a Safe Summer in Dorset

As the summer season approaches, authorities in Dorset are gearing up to ensure the safety of beachgoers, residents, and businesses. Collaborative efforts between Dorset Police, local councils, and fire crews aim to curb anti-social behavior, violence, and wildfire incidents.

Dorset Police, along with BCP Council, Dorset Council, Weymouth Town Council, and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, have launched a seasonal safety operation. This will involve increased uniformed patrols across popular public areas in Bournemouth and Weymouth throughout the summer months.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan emphasized the collective efforts to maintain Dorset’s status as one of the top 10 safest counties in the country, with reported anti-social behavior showing a decrease. Officers will be equipped with dispersal powers to maintain order in problem areas.

Dorset’s police and crime commissioner David Sidwick expressed the readiness to tackle the surge in demand during the popular summer months, highlighting the importance of robust enforcement, strong partnership working, and public cooperation for a safe summer.

Cllr Kieron Wilson of BCP Council acknowledged the progress in reducing anti-social behavior and violence, aiming to provide a fun, inclusive, and safe experience for residents and visitors. Cllr Nick Ireland of Dorset Council echoed the sentiment, emphasizing visible and reassuring presence through partnerships to address community concerns.

Authorities are also cautioning about the increased risk of wildfires with rising temperatures and the influx of holidaymakers. Area manager Jason Moncrieff urged both locals and visitors to exercise caution and prevent incidents that strain fire resources.

In Weymouth, beach patrols will be intensified to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors. Cllr David Harris, leader of Weymouth Town Council, highlighted the daily patrols and inspections conducted by the Resort Team, underlining collaborative efforts with the policing team for operational efficiency.
